Thursday Thirteen - The BBQ Menu

This weekend I'll be hosting a BBQ Going Away party for a coworker of my husband. With about 20 or so expected to come, and the vast majority being men, I've decided to make the food simple, and of course, yummy. Here are 13 items that I'll be serving. Much of the food will be placed at 2 tables where they'll be sitting around. I'll have a 3rd table set as the "bar" and the larger items, like the salads.
  1. Tortilla chips and salsa/queso
  2. Chips and dip
  3. Veggies and dip
  4. Hard pretzels
  5. Nuts
  6. Crackers
  7. French Potato Salad (yummy Barefoot Contessa recipe!)
  8. Pasta salad
  9. Garden salad
  10. Churassco (skirt steak) - cut into bite size pieces and set at tables
  11. Hot and mild sausage - cut into bite size pieces and set at tables
  12. BBQ Chicken
  13. Cookies & brownies

Tuesday Toot - 95 Degree Knee Bend!

My toot....I have to say I'm pretty excited about how I can now bend my knee to 95 degrees. Also, at physical therapy I was able to do a full forward and backward rotation on the bike last week!!! It's been quite a challenge with a little munchkin running around!)

See you tomorrow when I list over 10 recalls issued by the CSPC in the past week!!!

Tackle It Tuesday -

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Happy Tuesday!

To me there is something so special about getting a card...birthday, congratulations...in the actual mail. Yes, I agree that sending your birthday cards through Hallmark.com or BlueMountain is in doubt easier and cheaper, but the thrill of finding a special little envelope addressed to you is awesome!

My grandmother-in-law, should receive an award with her card sending. A week before any of our birthdays we ALWAYS receive a personally picked birthday card. She has inspired me! I asked her to write out all the birthday of the family (over 60 people) so I can try to be like her!

To organize myself, I purchased, via eBay, a birthday/greeting card organizer. The book has a page for each month. On the page I can jot down the birthdays of that month and put in the cards in the sleeve. In the middle of the month (ideally) I take out the cards for the next month, look at the bithday/events, write out the cards, seal them and put the event date where the stamp will go. Now I'm all set. Periodically throughout the month I look to see if any cards need to be stamped and sent and put out with the mail. (By the way, I also keep a book of stamps in my organizer! That gives me no excuse to get the cards out!)

Smart Mama Move -

  1. Create or purchase a card organizer!

  2. Dedicate some time (Tackle It Tuesday) to gather birthdays and other events. Write them in the organizer.

  3. Buy some cards and begin addressing the cards for the next month.

  4. Send the cards.

  5. Enjoy knowing the smile you put on a loved ones face when they received your card in the mail!

By the way, I puchased greeting cards in bulk also via eBay. It's an odd assortment of cards but usable. I saved tons of money and time on purchasing the cards.

Friday! Family Tree-ing?!

Smarty Pants Mama Move of the Day - Buy genealogy software!!!

One of the items on my "list" is to digitize our family tree. Years ago, a distant cousin in Germany gave me a family tree that he had done. It was written in pencil on a long bulletin board paper. I've had it rolled up in the poster holder since then with the idea to buy a family tree software and enter in what he had done and add more. I've been forever excited with this but have not yet found a moment to begin!

I'm super inspired to start! I spent some time yesterday searching for what's the best application out there. I'm stumped. I've read good and bad reviews on what I beleive to be the 2 top competitors - Family Tree Maker and Legacy. What I'm searching for is real true advice from people who have used either, or another, applications.
Please share!!!

Thursday Thirteen - 13 Ways to Save Money with Your Own Garden!

Ok, we all have seen it, the crazy prices at the supermarket, the gas station and just about everywhere else! This year I have decided to do my own "green" way of helping the country and my family - I have started my own garden. The garden serves a couple of different purposes. First, my 18 month old LOVES it! She is learning little by little how I take care of it - watering, removing dead leaves and picking the veggies when they're ready. Second of all - it's now one less thing to buy at the store - could amount to one less trip - which could amount to less gas - which means less $$$ spent! Go ahead, be a SMART MAMA and try it out!

I promise that I DO NOT HAVE A GREEN THUMB. I have just had some luck and some great help at the beginning (a friend who was staying with us around Christmas would take the seeds out of any veggies I would buy and plant them. We often don't even know what's growing until the fruit/veggie starts to grow!)

Also, you'll see some pictures of cocoons that formed this week around one of our mysterious plants. The plant was covered with ugly black and white caterpillars for a couple of weeks and the next thing you know we are going to have a butterfly garden!!! I can't wait!

Enjoy viewing my 13 best parts of my garden. (Please note that I live in South Florida so things grow here at different times than up north!)

We had a great weekend - as I'm sure many mommies did!

Saturday - We were out of the house by 8:45 and on our way to The Original Pancake House. It's a yummy restaurant that is extremely OVERPRICED! I was so impressed with my munchkin. We sat her at the high chair, up close to the table. Tom cut up a pancake and she, just like a big girl, used her little plastic fork to feed herself! I was so impressed and proud. That alone could have been my Mother's Day gift! We spent the rest of the day running other errands.
Mother's Day Sunday - I received a beautiful bracelet that came with a matching bracelet for my munchkin. We both wore our bracelets and looked adorable! They are beautiful! I actually started the day with coffee in bed, along with the newpapers and the scissors (to cut my coupons!) After showers and such, I printed out my Publix Grocery Game list! I highlighted what we would buy and pulled the coupons. We excitedly headed to Publix. I couldn't wait to see how much we would save! We pulled up to the cashier with the cart nearly overfull and learned that we saved $70 and only spent $55!!! I couldn't believe it! Later in the day we had a great lunch with my parents - where my daughter again was such a big girl eating all by herself! We stopped at Winn-Dixie on the way home to buy some meats and other little things that I had printed from the Grocery Game and we ended up spending $50 and saving $49! This is crazy! I am a real Grocery Game addict!!! It is just unreal how much money you can save! I wish losing weight was as easy as this!

Feel free to email or leave a comment if you have any questions on the Grocery Game. You can also visit their website http://www.thegrocerygame.com . If you decide to join in on the savings, please put me down as your referral: cubtie@aol.com

Free for Me Friday - Happy Mother's Day!

Friday!!!!!!!! Gotta love it!

We don't have too much planned this weekend, with the exception of Mother's Day. On Saturday I hope to spend a little time at the pool. My daughter LOVES it, as does my husband, plus it's great for my therapy. (By the way, I was able to bend my knee to 90 degrees this week at the doctor's - I'm so excited!!)

On Sunday, we'll be going out to an early brunch with my parents. It's tough now with Isa and her nap schedule to coordinate things. If she misses or is late in having her nap it completely impacts her mood! Don't want that!!! So, we're going to be eating a little earlier than we would normally.

I'll also head to the supermarket on Sunday to keep up with the Grocery Game. I'll let you know on Monday how well I do! I've started a ticker on the farthest right column on my blog to track my savings. Check it out!

What are your plans for Mother's Day weekend?

To all the mommies out there, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!! I hope it's super special!

Smiles,
Caroline

Thursday Thirteen - A Photo Collage

Happy Thursday!

I can't believe that it is already Thursday - this week has flown by!
I've stumbled over what to list for Thursday Thirteen. I was nearly going to share thirteen things my 18 month daughter would do if she ruled the world - i.e. play with play-doh all day or watch Dora for hours straight! But, instead I'm going to share 13 of my favorite pictures of her from the last 18 months. Enjoy!
