Below are the CPSC recalls that I have received since Wednesday, February 24, 2010. There are 2 recalls for roman shades. Roman shades pose a strangulation hazard with children. There is a recall for a children's fork and spoon set that was sold at Dollar Tree stores in January. The prongs of the fork can snap and potentially cause a choking hazard. Name of Product: Scotsman® Commercial Modular Cube Ice Machines (Modular Cubers)
Hazard: The solenoid, an electrical component in the product, can fail and result in an electrical arc that can pose a fire hazard.
Description: The recalled machines are designed to be installed on top of ice storage bins or ice dispensers, and typically are used in commercial establishments. Model numbers begin with C0322, C0330, C0522, C0530, C0630, C0830, C1030, C1448, C1848, C2148, EH130, EH222, EH330, or EH430, and serial numbers of the recalled machines within these model designations begin with 05, 06, 07, 08 or 09. Model and serial numbers are on the back of all machines and, depending on the model, behind the machine’s front panel either in the lower right corner of the machine or on the left side of the sheet metal wall that separates the larger (equipment) compartment from the smaller (ice-making) compartment.
Scotsman® commercial flake and nugget ice machines, commercial undercounter cube ice machines, and residential ice machines are not involved in this recall.

Name of Product: Scooby Doo, Tweety and Batman Fork and Spoon Sets
Hazard: The middle two prongs of the plastic fork can detach, posing a choking hazard to children.
Description: This recall involves the Scooby Doo, Tweety and Batman plastic fork and spoon sets. The two-piece set is white plastic with cartoon images on the handle.
Sold at: Dollar Tree Stores and Deals during January 2010 for about $1 per set.

Name of Product: Lutron Shading Solutions Roman Shades
Hazard: Strangulations can occur when a child places his/her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his/her neck. Also, in manual Roman shades, strangulations can also occur if the shade's looped bead chain is not attached to the wall or to the floor and a child's neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop.
Description: This recall involves all custom-ordered made-to-measure motorized and manual Lutron Shading Solutions Roman shades. The shades were sold in a variety of colors, fabrics, and sizes. Nearly all shades were professionally installed. "Lutron Shading Solutions" or "Lutron Shading Solutions by VIMCO" is printed on the packaging.
Sold at: Specialty dealers and Expo Design Centers nationwide from January 2000 through August 2009 for between $120 and $4,500 per shade.

Sure you can sit on the couch to eat your donut...wait, NOOOOO!!!!!! What was I thinking? You know what I'm talking about. You're in the midst of something (Tweeting, cooking, on the phone) and the munchkin starts to pester you about something. You, in ways annoyingly say sure, sure, sure without realizing what you're agreeing to. Well below is a prime example of that.

Smart Mamas, I think we have 2 lessons here. #1 Attempt to realize what you agree to before you agree (good luck with that one!) #2 Get a little vacuum to have on hand just in case (an easier solution!)

I think you can clearly see my obsession with my little Dirt Devil Gator 10.8V-
this is a little vacuum purchased with my own money for around $30. Sooooooo awesome and very Smart Mama friendly!

Antibiotics - We made it to 39 months!

Well we made it until she was 39 months for her 1st dose of antibiotics. She had a nasty ear infection last month that actually came back (or maybe never went away) this month with the added bonus of some sort of respiratory infection. So now not only are we on antibiotics AGAIN, but the poor thing is on steroids and using a nebulizer 3x a day. My poor baby.

I think that 39 months antibiotic free is really good. What do you think? I'm not a health nut, although my recent postings about produce might convince you otherwise. We watch what we eat but we did finish a bag of Doritos yesterday. So how has she maintained this great immune system (obviously, up until now?) My guess: she has a vitamin a day, loves blueberries and devoured 3 months of my breastmilk (Thank you very much to the Medela Pump that made it possible - she wouldn't latch.) - of course the Doritos are an added bonus ;0)

They really scare you these days about the overuse of antibiotics. My cardiologist (I have MVP) now only wants me using them for serious dental work. They fear superbugs? First off, what exactly is a superbug? Are you envisioning a huge bug the size of a softball flying around like me?

What's your though on antibiotics and kids? Are your kids still antibiotic-free?

Look what was unearthed tonight? The ridiculously large and PAIN to clean George Foreman Grill! I know you have one too. Who doesn't? This isn't my first. I originally owned, during my bachlorette days the more standard size. But the moment I was let loose with the bridal registry gun in hand I was certain to include the "FAMILY" size George Foreman Grill. Yes, we did use it, maybe a dozen times during the 1st 6 months or so. The annoyance of cleaning it is what tucked it away to gather dust for years now. Well, with the desire for grilled chicken and severe thunderstorm warning in effect, I grabbed the tot-lock to open that cabinet that holds the George Foreman!

Well, 8 minutes on medium produced absolutely scrumptious, moist grilled chicken! Cleaning it wasn't too bad. Maybe now in Smart Mama-hood, you quickly learn that a few more minutes of cleaning for the fam is well worth it!
I think I may take it out again to make Rachael Ray's Grilled Chicken and Eggplant Parm Stacks that she had on her show on Wednesday.
Would love to learn how other Smart Mamas use their George Foreman!

Recall Wednesday: Martha Stewart Collection® Enameled Steel Kettle, Hooded Sweatshirts w/ Drawstrings, Pumptec Electric Motor Controllers Submersible

Below are the CPSC recalls that I have received since Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Again I'm seeing recalls for hooded sweatshirts. At least once a month childrens' hooded sweatshirts are recalled due to drawstrings around the neck. The drawstring poses a tremendous strangulation risk to children.

In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled in the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts. Be sure to check old hand-me-downs for this!

This Week's Produce and Some Yummy Recipes

My produce of the week:

· Beet Roots
· Cucumbers

How would you use these? I'm especially interested in the beets. You can't see them too well in this photograph but there are 3 large beet roots - something I have never cooked before! Annie has a recipe for Can't Beet Red Velvet Cupcakes that I might try! I just can't even fathom the idea of beets in cupcake batter!

Last night I made two fantastic side dishes using produce from last week that must share!

Using the kale that I recently received I made Sauteed Kale by Bobby Flay, as listed on FoodNetwork.com

Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds young kale, stems and leaves coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves garlic, finely sliced
1/2 cup vegetable stock or water (I actually used chicken stock b/c that's what I had on hand)

Salt and pepper
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar (ever added this b/c I forgot to)
Directions
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook until soft, but not colored. Raise heat to high, add the stock and kale and toss to combine. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Remove cover and continue to cook, stirring until all the liquid has evaporated. Season with salt and pepper to taste and add vinegar.

Next, I made Perfect Fingerling Potatoes by Alton Brown, as listed on FoodNetwork.com

Ingredients

1 1/4 pounds kosher or rock salt

2 quarts water
2 pounds small fingerling potatoes, cleaned
4 tablespoons butter, optional
Freshly ground black pepper, optional
1 tablespoon freshly chopped chives, optional
Directions
In a large pot, combine the salt, water, and potatoes and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from the pot to a cooling rack and let stand for 5 to 7 minutes. Serve as is or with butter, pepper, or chives.

I was very convinced that the potatoes were going to be ridiculously salty, but they weren't. I mean, yes, they were salty, but tasty, salty. Like a good potato chip. We didn't add anything to them as we ate (no butter or anything!)

Hope you get the chance to try out these recipes. They were such a hit!

South Florida Weather - 78 and Sunny in February! Love it!

Living in South Florida sure has its perks. A day like yesterday, in the middle of February, is certainly one of them! Words don't give this beautiful day justice, but, these pictures might help. We spent the better part of the day outside - lunch at Big Pink (http://www.bigpinkrestaurant.com/about.html) in South Beach (de-li-cious!!!!) a walk on the beach and then a Chinese New Years festival at the community college near by (Miami-Dade.)

So South Florida has the weather perk, and also the weather annoyances - just ask me in the middle of August when it's 90 with 100% humidity as I'm boarding my house up for a hurricane!

PS - Today it's 70 and rainy :-( I think I jinxed the weather!

CoolWhip won the challenge...what to do with over 2lbs of strawberries!

Thanks for the great encouragement to do something yummy with the lot of strawberries we picked earlier in the week. I had really wanted to make jam, however, the CoolWhip container won! Yes, we enjoyed nearly every last strawberry dunked into CoolWhip. Oh, how yummy!

February Resolution: Organization - The JUNK Drawer!

Oh yes, February Resolution: Organization continues!!!! Another kitchen drawer was tackled! This is the infamous junk drawer. I know you have one too! It has everything imaginable. I found 2 screwdrivers, an emery board, dozen of pens, markers, crayons, expired coupons, paper clips and 7 phone/USB type cords! I even found a Mexican peso! Well THANK YOU to the inventor of Ziploc, because that's what saved me with this challenge! I organized the "junk" into 5 different categories and viola the drawer is organized. I also tossed sooooo much! It felt soooo good! Only one more drawer to go!!!!

National PTA Founders' Day

Bet you didn't know that today is National PTA Founders' Day? On this day in 1897 Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Alice McLellan Birney began their mission to see how teachers, parents and community members together can provide support, information and resources to the families of the school. I'm reminded of the ancient African proverb, it takes a village to raise child.

PTA (Parent Teachers Association) in schools are so valuable. I spent 8 years in the public schools, beginning as a classroom teacher, so I saw 1st hand how an active PTA provides such an asset to the school, while an inactive PTA is a real detriment. The schools really have such a great resource of parents who truly have a vested interest in the school. The parents who volunteer their time show a true commitment to their students.

Did you know that the National PTA has helped lead the way to...

the creation of kindergarten classes,

child labor laws,

a public health service,

hot lunch programs,

a juvenile justice system,

mandatory immunization

Annie posted a fantastic sounding recipe for Asparagus and Lemon Chicken over Rice! I still have a few lemons left over from last week so I think this may be dinner tonight! I'll let you know how it tastes!

Strawberry Picking - seasons switched!

Strawberry picking is a memory many have from childhood. Growing up in the northeast, strawberry picking correlated to the start of summer, with orchards open mid-June through August. Things are certainly different in South Florida. The thought of walking around outside in the middle of the summer, in a field in looking for strawberries puts me in a overheated panic. Clearly, as my adventure today can attest, strawberry picking is a middle of the winter activity down here! The milder weather and limited rains make it ideal strawberry season in this area.

Friends and I headed to Knaus Berry Farm in Homestead, FL today to pick strawberries. We, particularly the kids, had a blast. With 5 girls between 4 1/2 and nearly 3, we picked lbs and lbs of strawberries, enjoyed the most delicious milkshakes and stood in a well deserved line to purchase homemade sticky buns to bring home to the daddies!

Now I need to retrain the brain: Valentine's time of year = strawberry picking! Can't wait to go again!

Smart Pants Product of the Week: Annie's Organic Produce Buying Club

Did you watch the CBS video I posted, Chemicals That Make You Fat? Were you as disgusted as me? I've never really bought into the organic crunchy lifestyle, but in recent years it's becoming more evident that the hormone filled steak may not be the best thing for you!

With this new realization I now look forward to Mondays around noon when I receive a wonderful phone call...."You can pick up after 1:30." No, not my munchkin, my produce! For nearly 2 months I have subscribed to Annie's Organic Produce Buying Club (http://www.anniesbuyingclub.com/) here in South Florida. For less than $40 a week I receive a tremendous box full of organic, and often local, produce. The box typically contains the staples of what we would normally buy, lettuce, tomatoes and bananas. But, every week there are items new and unique to me, my hubby and especially my little one.

Yummy, right? Did you notice that beautiful artichoke or the yellow, yes I said yellow, mini carrots?? Annie's Club really gets me eating things I would have NEVER even thought of placing in my cart at Publix. I made collard green with leeks a few weeks ago, and have you ever had a saucer squash, well I had it sauteed with onions last month!

Each week not only am I provided with a bounty of produce, thankfully I receive a great resource of recipes that correspond with the produce of the week! It doesn't get much better than that! Actually, it does!!! With Annie's Club there are...

Looking for a great Smart Mama activity for your pre-schooler??? I found it! With ZERO good G or even PG movies out there for the under 7 crew, Kid Toon Films has come to the rescue, a la SUPER WHY style! Two SUPER WHY episodes, Comic Book: Attack of the Eraser and The Big Game, will be in movie theaters on weekends in February as part of the Kidtoons program.

Converting the entertainment center into.....I don't know!!!

I've been having that urge to get something new for the house...know that feeling?! Along came my mom with an opportunity to furniture swap! We swapped my Crate and Barrel Wine Bar for her Pier 1 entertainment center/armoire. My parents finally got a flat screen TV for their family room so they were ready to ditch the 'in great condition' armoire when I chimed in! We could take it! However, we don't have room for it. I offered her the wine chest, to make room, and it was a deal!

Ok, so here's the dilemma...WHAT DO I DO WITH THE ARMOIRE??? We put it in our dining room, right next to the kitchen with the original idea of converting it into a bar - I do need a place to put my wine glasses now that my Crate and Barrel bar is gone.

But, the need of an "office space" is really up there! I need a good resting spot for my laptop, printer and 17" monitor, as well as bills and random paperwork; a kitchen counter area is the current home . I've googled around and have found a great blog My Sweet Savannah - her posting back in June 2009 - ~armoires, they're not just for storing clothes~ has tons of ideas. Of course, it was like a Cheesecake Factory menu - too many ideas for me that I'm left clueless!

So what do you think I should do???

February Resolution: Organization #2

This is the drawer right next to the cutlery. It holds larger serving ware and lots of other miscellaneous stuff. One challenge I had was to incorporate the stuff from the cutlery drawer that I took out yesterday! I also found a ridiculous number of chopsticks from PF Changs to Asian Station, our decent Chineese/Japaneese delivery! I opted to put the chopsticks in Isa's arts and crafts bin since I don't see us using 15 sets of chopsticks in the near future!

Patting my back!!!! Now I need to start thinking of the next nook!!! Will it be nightstand drawer or the linen closet...I'll take a suggestion because honestly, I don't want to do either! =)

February Resolution: Organization - Cutlery Drawer

I've made a resolution with myself - I guess I can't call it a New Year's resolution since I really didn't start it until February. We can call it the February resolution - the February Resolution: Organization!

I have nooks and crannies around the house, some larger than others, that are in desperate need of organization. Some are drawers, closets, under beds, pantries and the like. I'm taking a guess that I'm not the only Smart Mama with this going on! Well, I hereby promise to clean/organize a nook every day. The nooks will vary in size, from one shelf in the pantry to my daughter's closet (I made need extra help here!) My daily clean out will range in time to complete - with areas like my medicine cabinet just minutes and the garage, well I won't even go there yet!

Oh the tales of child birthday party invites...or adult for that matter!!! Who do we invite? Who do we not invite? Are you annoyed that you didn't make the list or relieved for a classmate's birthday party at the park that is just at a bad time?

Great question/dilemma! I just went through this last fall with Isa's birthday. Parties come in different sizes. We all can't have a party of 100 with circus acts and popcorn. We each do what's best for our child and family. Sometimes that means a small party with the closest of friends and sometimes that means every child in the class, even if your child doesn't stand them or barely knows their name! In your case I think you should accept and appreciate the invitation, plus look forward to a fun time for your little one!

In my case, after Isa being invited to numerous birthday parties by classmates, I unfortunately wasn't able to return the invite for her birthday to everyone. We held her party at a bounce house party place and had a limited number of guests allowed. I decided to just invite the girls, rather than pick and choose those who thought she liked the most.

Anyone have a different idea? Comments? Thoughts?

Paparazzi Smarty Pants in the house! Yes, on our latest trip to Disney World in December I spotted Kelly Ripa! As I was waiting from Tom and Isa to finish the Jungle Cruise I noticed a small crowd forming near the exit. My "I promise I was not eavesdropping" ears heard something about Kelly Ripa being here. So I figured, hey why not, lets join in! I took out my phone and started snapping photos as she and crew exited. It felt wrong and right all at the same time. I won't mention how Tom laughed at me when he realized how ridiculous I was being.

Miami MetroZoo - best pass I've owned!

One of the best gifts have I received as a mommy was a membership to our local zoo, Miami MetroZoo. It was a present back in Fall of 2008. We got such use out of it. The pass let me bring one child under the age of 2 (my daughter, obviously!) and another adult. It worked great. On the weekends, my husband was the adult and on the weekdays I could easily invite a friend with her child to come, free of charge! Great deal, right?!

A few weeks ago we hit the zoo after a few months of just not having the time. We had a BLAST! The animals were moving, the weather was perfect and we got a ridiculous amount of exercise in (the zoo is HUGE!) Best of all, we renewed our pass!

The weather is still a bit on the chilly side. I still can't believe what a wuss I've become!

I actually wore my UGG style boots today. Just a few wek ago I would have sweated just at the thought of wearing them in South Florida, and here I am shivering wearing a wool sweater when it's 55 out! What have a I turned into!

I've been busy at the oven during naptime today. With yesterday's produce delivery (I need to fill you in about that one of these days) we got a huge thing of bok choy, daikon radishes and Jeruselem artichokes. What exactly do I do with all this! Thankfully with these frigid tempurters I had a request from my hubby for some stew tonight. So, with my fresh box of produce, plus TONS left over from last week, I have a yummy, healthy stew simmering on the stovetop. I adapted a recipe from SparkRecipes.com so I hope it comes out ok! It smells awesome! (BTW, the radishes are still sitting in the fridge with the artichokes. I need to find another easy recipe!)

It's the Monday morning cold blues! Wow, woke up this AM to the low 40s in South Florida! Yikes! I grew up in the northeast but I have certainly acclimated in my 4 1/2 years down south. Winters in my book are now filled with days in the high 60s to low 70s. Not any of this nonsense!

I hit the gym this morning to work with my trainer. Although I'm dealing with a sprained finger and possible torn ligament I was there! Cheers to me! It has been nearly 3 months of dedication and I'm seeing such a difference already! I'm down at least one dress size, possibly 2! The scale isn't showing as much - just about 10 lbs. I've also been blessed to receive so many compliments during the last month. I love it! Woo Hoo!

My Halloween Sweets

I was asked to bring something for the annual Halloween festivities at my cousin's home. A great house filled with over 50 mommies, daddies and munchkins - I knew it had to be something all ages would love! Last year I made Brownie Ghosts which were a huge hit! This year I need to kick it up a notch. I searched and searched online and found a yummy, not too complicated treat! Peanut Butter Eyes!!!! Here's the recipe with some of my adaptations...

Ingredients
1/2 cup butter, softened - I used Smart Balance
1 1/2 cups peanut butter - I used reduced fat!
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla
18 ounces white dipping chocolate - 3 boxes
1/2 cup mini chocolate chip
blue food coloring

Directions

Cream the butter and peanut butter together.
Beat in the vanilla and sugar.
Chill for 1/2 hour.
Roll into small balls, chill on wax paper for another 1/2 hour.
In a microwave, melt the white dipping chocolate.
Using two spoons dip the eyeballs into the white chocolate.
Let cool on waxed paper until firm. Chilling will speed up the process.
Pour a drop or two of blue food coloring into the remaining melted chocolate.
Make a round iris on the eyeball, and immediately press a miniature chocolate chip in the center for a pupil, doing 5 at at time.
For the bloodshot effect, dip the tiny end of a toothpick in red food colouring and squiggle the lines from the pupil outward, but not quite to the edges of the ball.
These are quite tasty--considering how creepy they are.

Note: White dipping chocolate is also known as white bark.

One of my biggest lessons learned is to keep the cooled - whether in the fridge or on the counter if it is cool enough. I set my eyes on display and many of them go mushy - still super yummy, but messier than needed.

For whatever reason I never took a picture of the final product. The last picture was taken as we were adding the pupils. I put them on the tree cupcake holders, that held 24 eyes per tree. They looked great and the reaction I got from the party was fantastic!

Peanut Butter Inventory!

I'm a Grocery Game junkie! I've saved well into the thousands in the last 15 months! Anyway, I found this shelf of my pantry quite amusing...do you think I need more peanut butter?? Also, it may be hard to see, but there are 3 canisters of oatmeal in the back! I think I need to start checking my inventory and maybe make a few batches of peanut butter oatmeal cookies!! Yum Yum! Ha Ha!

Goldfish Made with Smiles! =)

Ok, so this made me stop and smile! The other day as I was opening a new bag of Goldfish, my latest fitness kick convinced me to look at the label and ingredients, (I try to be a health nut whenever possible!) Much to my surprise I came across the greatest 1st ingredient of any package of my pantry! According to the Goldfish Cheddar bag, the little fishies are, "Made with SMILES and... " What? Smiles? How great is that!? You know that the 1st ingredient is the ingredient of largest quantity in the item! So, I wonder, if you eat food made with lots of smiles, will you instantly have a smile on your face? I sure did! And, I bet you do too! :-) Go ahead, go find that bag of Goldfish and check it out!

The Smell of My Birthday!

I'm from Long Island, NY and now call South Florida home. There are certainly things from NY that I miss. One of the most difficult to adjust to is the lack of seasons. Or should I say profound seasons. Yes, in Florida we do experience "winter," it's just a bit different than the winters in NY. The heat lessens, as does the humidity. People dress as if it's 20 degrees out, when the weatherman frightens the viewers with a chance of high 50s at night. It's a but amusing. Anyway, the season I miss the very most is autumn. I miss the leaves changing. I miss the leaves falling. And, most importantly, I miss the smell of the leaves. It's a smell that is so reminiscent of my childhood and my birthday. I have a birthday this month, and with just one whiff of an autumn leaf I know my birthday is approaching. One of my greatest friends knows that and sent me the most wonderful birthday goody - a box of autumn - full of leaves, pine cones and more! Now I know my birthday is soon!

My Swimming Shark!!

My daughter is starting another session of swimming this afternoon. Yes, we live where it's warm so swimming is easily a 12 month sport! Plus, the swimming school, Ocaquatics http://www.ocaquatics.com/ , has a new indoor facility that is beautiful!

Halloween Decorations....To do or not to do?

I still can't believe Halloween is just weeks away! Where has this year gone!?!?!

I've gotten more in the spirit this year with my near 3 year old munchkin asking for decorations! We have a few jack-o-lanterns and two scarecrows outside. My neighbors on the other hand are decked out with pumpkin lights, a witch, 4 scarecrows and who knows what else! My favorite so far this season has got to be the creepy crawly spiders climbing my friend's house. Yes, the scared the living daylights out of me the other day!

DVR...life before it...can't even imagine!

Good Morning Smart Mamas!

I'm awaking on this 3rd day of some sort of nasty cold, virus thing. Yuck! I'm enjoying a cocktail of Chloraseptic, TheraFlu and Mucinex...oh joy!

Yesterday, in my poor sick me slump, I very much, thanks to DVR, enjoyed my own Project Runway marathon! It was great! I had 5 episodes to entertain me, one right after the other! I was interrupted a few times with my husband (who worked from home to be my wonderful caretaker) asking to watch a little Sports Center, every hour or so! I would let him steal the remote, just for a few minutes!

So life before DVR...do you remember it?? I can't even fathom it at this point. If you were to look at my Recorded Programs, you would find everything from a number of Ghost Hunters episodes to the news clips from my Grocery Game TV debut in the spring! I also think the TV shows must love it too. Now instead of just watching one program last night at 8 PM. We watched How I Met Your Mother, and then House, all along also taping Heroes and Big Bang Theory to watch on a later date! I love it!

Now let's talk about how DVR has become a must-have tool for Smart Mamas!!! Is your box filled with episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, SuperWhy! or Dora?? Mine sure is! I try to sneak in a SuperWhy! episode whenever possible, and as it normally comes on when my munchkin is already at preschool, the DVR is perfect! I play the prior day's episode during breakfast, ensuring that she gets a little extra educational TV time to start her day ;-) Can you tell that I use to be a teacher!!!?? ;-)

Hotel Reviews .... to believe or not beleive!

Have you ever use TripAdvisor.com to help decide which hotel to stay at for your next vacation? I have. Tons of times. Actually just this summer we were planning a summer getaway with my parents to Boca Raton. My mother, a corporate travel agent, had wanted to stay a the Boca Raton Resort and Club. I, the tech-savvy family member, went online to see what what others thought of it. Throughout the TripAdvisor.com website I read dozens and dozens of review, great, good and even some bad. Some where so good that I started wondering who wrote it, others were so bad that I started thinking if the reviewer just was in a bad mood or maybe even the hotel's competitor faking a review. Well, we took our chances and enjoyed 4 wonderful days. The hotel was great, although we did encounter an inconvenience or two that the bad reviewer had mentioned. Ironic.

The Northeast - The College Savers; The Midwest - Not so much!

What are your college saving plans for your munchkin(s)? Do you even have one?

In this house we started saving with the 1st monetary gift that she received. I don't think the money is in the best place for long term educational savings so it is something that we still need to research.

I have found it quite interesting that a recent Sallie Mae Gallup study has found that: Families in the Northeast have saved the most with an average savings of $15,846 closely followed by the West with $15,589. The South has an average savings of $13,722 and the Midwest has the lowest with an average of $9,693.

What does geography have to do with savings? Does the percentage of college grad parents...or maybe...the cost of living impact the percentage of college saving accounts? I'm not sure.

I dedicate today's posting to a HS classmate who lost her courageous battle with breast cancer at the much too young age of 33 yesterday.

Please keep her family (3 young boys and husband) and extended family in your prayers.

You may remember learning of her last month when I shared One-a-Day's Take a Stand promotion http://smartypantsmama.blogspot.com/2009/08/one-day-take-stand-breast-cancer.html , to raise money for breast cancer research. Now, more than ever, I can clearly see the tremendous need dedicate time and money to find a cure!

Disney on Budget Ideas!

Well the bags are nearly packed, the portable DVD player is charging and the juice boxes are lined up! Thank you Smart Mamas for some great ideas about staying on a super tight budget on my next Disney trip!

Here are some tips I you have shared:

- look into the FREE Disney Dining Plan - unfortunatly we do not qualify for 2 reasons - #1 we are not purchasing tickets as we have season passes and #2 we are getting a discounted room

- have our munchkin eat from our plates rather than ordering a separate kid meal - Great idea!

- BYOB - Love it, bottle of wine now packed!

- use the microwave in the hotel "food court" to heat up meals, pop popcorn... - packing microwaveable meals!

- eat a BIG breakfast - Did you say extra bacon? ;-) LOL

The recalled PowerLock connector links are identified by a date code of M or N, which is located on the side of the PowerLock connector link. 10-speed SRAM chains that were equipped with recalled PowerLock connector links include the following chain model numbers: PC-1030, PC-1050, PC-1070, PC-1090 and PC-1090R. The recalled chains were also installed on some Guru, Surly, Salsa, BMC, Serotta, Seven, and Ridley brand complete bicycles. The individual PowerLock connectors and bike chains with these connectors were sold from January 2009 through August 2009; bicycles with affected chains were sold from April 2009 through August 2009.

Disney World on a Food Budget!

We are season passholders and Florida residents, so we tend to do a number of Walt Disney World trips each year. Our trips have been both on a budget and extravagent.

We're gearing up for a Disney trip soon! We'll be there for 3 nights/4 days. Our tickets are paid (season passholders) and our French Quarter rooms are under $100/night (superb passholder rate!) so that leaves just the food to be budgeted!

My food budget is $120 for the entire trip! I know that sounds crazy for one person, let alone 2 adults and 2 year old! But, I really want to make an honest effort.

Here are some of the ways I plan on staying within the budget:

bringing breakfast (cereal and milk), sandwich making ingredients and tons of snacks
going out to dinner at places that offer a passholder discount and have good size portions (i.e. the Wolfgang Puck Express in Downtown Disney or Earl of Sandwich)
using my refillable mug

I know that there must be more ways!!! Help! I would love to learn from other Smart Mamas who have been-there, done-that on a budget at Disney!

This story is a sure way to add some smiles and laughs in your classroom! Miss Mingo, the flamingo teacher, is faced with a class of animals (alligators to pandas) who, at first, are a bit shy. Doesn't that already remind you of the 1st days in your classroom!? The animal students quickly open up as they begin to share interesting facts of themselves. The book is filled with tons of information to especially grab the attention of the animal lovers in class!

I recommend this book as a read aloud for grades K - 3.

I'm the lunchbox packer in this house, like many other Smart Mamas. We fill lunchboxes for the young and old (maybe I should have said middle-aged) with favorites like PB&J sandwiches to bags of chips.

Science for Kids! Great TV Programming!

The slow push of science and social studies out of the curriculum is something teachers have witnessed for the last 10 years. I have often wondered if the world won't have any use of scientist in the future, if this is the direction the chaotic land of US education has gone. Thankfully, in the recent years someone has been listening, because there has been a great emphasis on QUALITY science-based TV programming for students. One of my favorites is Sid the Science Kid on PBS Kids. Have you seen it? It's fantastic! Sid, the main character, faces a different scientific problem each episode. With the help of his classmates and teacher, he enthusiastically faces the science!!! Sid the Science Kid is one of those shows that makes me think of my former 3rd grade students...I know they would have learned scientific concepts and equally as important LOVED it!

Did you know that the desire to volunteer in a child's classroom has increased by 20%? According to a groundbreaking new study titled "The Economy's Impact on Back to School," GreatSchools and Harris Interactive have discovered this tremendous gain in desire to volunteer. With the challenges of today's economy parents are looking for ways to make this school year the most productive and affordable. While this increased desire, I wonder if the data will transfer to actual volunteer hours. I imagine that with job security never so fragile, parents may feel apprehensive asking for a few hours to dedicate to their munchkin's classroom. At the same time, with the increase in unemployment, more parents may be available.

I can honestly tell you that in my years of being a classroom teacher I cherished the times a parent was able to offer a helping hand. I hope each Smart Mama will be able to find the time to support their munchkin's or local school this year. Wondering how you can help a classroom teacher this year? Here are some ideas!

Economical & Budget-minded Paper Bag Lunches

We've been cutting coupons, scaling back vacations and big buys. Now with the school year on the horizon, we need to consider ways to keep our kids paper bag lunches yummy and economical! Below are some great tips from the Grocery Outlet:

Plan ahead. Shop from a list so you're less inclined to impulse spend on packaged junk food. Shop your cupboards and leftovers first to avoid duplicate purchases and be ready to change menu plans according to sales items.
Involve the kids. They're more likely to eat a lunch they helped prepare. Create a weekly lunch menu and let them circle their choices. Place healthy menu items (i.e. orange slices, carrot sticks, string cheese, etc.) in the refrigerator produce drawer and let kids choose two or three the night before.
Single servings are expensive and waste packaging. Buy items such as yogurt and soup in large containers.
Avoid sandwich burn-out. Swap the bread for a tortilla/wrap to make a fun-to-eat pinwheel. Let kids make cracker sandwiches with pre-cut meat and cheese. A hearty cereal packed in a plastic container with milk from a thermos will be a welcome change. And leftover pizza doesn't require a microwave.
Try “extreme value” food outlets – such as Grocery Outlet. These outlets purchase overstocks and closeouts directly from manufacturers resulting in prices up to 50% cheaper than conventional retailers. (For locations – visit http://www.groceryoutlets.com/)
Make it fun. Use cookie cutters (animal, holiday, etc.) for fun-to-eat sandwiches. Stickers always brighten up a plastic bag. You can even write a love note on the banana peel.

Childrens' Book Review: Messing Around the Monkey Bars

I get this feeling in August each year. I hear the teacher chatter, the excitement of the new school year. Getting the classroom ready, from bulletin boards to desk arrangement, putting together new lessons and finding new books and materials that could make all the difference this year! In my 8 years as a teacher, most of them as a 3rd grade teacher, I was a regular at the local bookstore, teacher store and library, always wanting to find the latest and greatest resources for my kids!

I've realized that once a teacher, always a teacher, as I still find myself looking out for the best teacher materials, 4 years since my departure from classroom days!

One of my new must-haves for this year is Messing Around on the Monkey Bars by Betsy Franco, illustrated by Jessie Hartland. This book, as tested by a rising 2nd grader who I work with a few times a week, is fantastic and FUN! The book of poems includes over a dozen poems to demonstrate the art of voice in writing. The print
alternates between bold and not bold, with the author's intent of a different student assigned to each. Essentially, two students alternate lines through the poem, bringing life and humor to the poem.

I recommend this book for 3 - 6 grade readers.

I must share my ridiculous savings at Publix this week!!! On Monday I went to Publix with my Grocery Game list and coupons. I walked out with $126 worth of groceries that I paid $56 for!!! Isn't that just unreal.???

Just last week I spoke with the store manager of my Publix to confirm that 2 coupons can be used in Buy One Get One Free promotions. I often get harassed by cashiers who try to claim that you can't use a coupon for something you get for free. Most times I am able to convince them that I'm right. Anyway, I sent Publix an email asking for clarification of their coupon policies and with a week the manger called. I was impressed. He confirmed that 2 coupons can certainly be used and he also mentioned that I can use competitor coupons. Yes, we can all get along! Kimberly Clark & Greenpeace make amends!

Being "green" with cloth towels and napkins is a bit of a challenge, especially with the convenience of paper products. Do understand that I honestly try to be as green as possible but I really just prefer a tissue to a hankie! I'm sure I'm no alone!

Well, I recently read some great "green" news that helps lift the spirits of us "really wish we could be green-er" moms! "Kimberly Clark, maker of Kleenex, Scott and Cottonelle brands, today announced stronger fiber sourcing standards that will increase conservation of forests globally and will make the company a leader for sustainably produced tissue products. In turn, Greenpeace, which worked with Kimberly-Clark on its revised standards, announced that it will end its “Kleercut” campaign, which focused on the company and its brands."

I guess now we can reach for the Kleenex and not feel so snotty =)! Way to go Kimberly Clark and Greenpeace!

Fresh Air Fund - Vacation for the Inner City

I spent a summer in college as a camp counselor for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Baltimore County, MD. Baltimore City children were invited to attend this camp abut 20 miles north of downtown Baltimore. It was fantastic. For many, if not most, it was their very 1st time leaving the city, seeing nature and seeing farm animals. I remember one little boys words of amazement when, at the age of 11, saw a horse for the 1st time.

Currently there is a unbelievable organization who is allowing experiences such as that for children of NYC. The Fresh Air Fund (www.FreshAir.org) a not-for-profit organization helps to provide a real summer vacation for the children. The kids are hosted by generous families all over the country who invite them to their home to spend part of their summer vacation. How wonderful!

Cleanliness at Camp - ACA Tips

I was lucky enough to spend two great summers at a sleep away camp, Camp Bernadette, in New Hampshire. The summers were a blast, filled with nightly pranks, fun sports, funny camp songs and more. I left on the long bus ride back to NY with fond memories and millions of lessons learned - sharing a cabin, bathroom and mess hall with hundreds of others, taught me not only patience but offered a great reminder of the importance of cleanliness.

Recently the American Camp Association has released excellent "lessons learned" by campers this summer as our society continues to face a flu outbreak. Enjoy the fantastic tips:

You can never have enough soap – Campers are practicing advanced and proper hand washing at camp this summer. They are learning to wash their hands in between activities, and not just before they eat. They are learning important lessons in personal sanitation. The camp experience is providing lots of practice and developing a habit of healthy hand washing.
You can't lick your elbow, but you can sneeze in it – Camp is teaching millions of children how to practice "safe sneezing." By learning to sneeze into their sleeves, they are learning to keep germs away from their hands and out of the air. Many influenza-like illnesses are spread by contact with infected droplets. Keeping a sneeze to oneself teaches campers to avoid sharing unwanted germs with cabin-mates, classmates, and families.
Looking for germs in all the right places – Campers are learning to think outside of the box when it comes to sanitizing and staying as germ free as possible. Some of the creative lessons learned at camp include using personal salad tongs and serving utensils and using alcohol wipes to sanitize high-contact activity areas. By identifying these "touch zones," campers are learning valuable lessons in how influenza-like illnesses spread and how they can be avoided.
Everyone else is doing it, why can't I – Campers aren't the only ones getting an education in precautionary practices – their parents are, too. When families see the difference these health and wellness habits make, they begin to implement them as well.

ThinkFirst Safety Tips from the Kessler Foundation!

As we're just about midway through the summer it's a great SMART MAMA move to be reminded of some life saving safety tips for our munchkins. Thank you to the Kessler Foundation, http://www.kesslerfoundation.org/, one of the largest nonprofits serving people with physical disabilities, for providing these great reminders!

Kessler Foundation ThinkFirst Safety Tips:

Check all outdoor toys that have been stored during the winter to insure no wheels are lose, no pieces are missing and there is no other wear that would make it unsafe for children.

Children should wear a helmet every time they ride their bike, skateboard or rollerblade. Studies have shown wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of a head injuries by as much as 85 percent.

When purchasing a helmet insure that it fits properly and meets or exceeds the safety standards developed by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and/or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

It is recommended that young children do not dive. Older children should do so in at least eight feet of water with arms extended out in front.

Always require children to wear a seatbelt while riding in a car and check to insure the belt is snug across their hips.

As my husband can attest, I ALWAYS second guess a purchase, UNLESS I have thoroughly researched it ahead of time to be certain its the best price and the best one out there. I have recently come across a new tool to help my thorough decision making...ShopSmart magazine.

Have you noticed it on newsstands? It's the latest magazine written by Consumer Reports. It offers HONEST advice on products. They are not persuaded by any one product, as they do not receive a dime in advertising $$$. Their tag line, no hype + no ads + just great buys, says it all!

I've been thumbing through the July 2009 issue and have really been impressed. For each product type they review, they will suggest Smart Picks - the best buys. In the case of the play yards this month, the tested 6 but only selected 3 as Smart Picks. I've also enjoyed the splurge vs. save recommendations for products such as lawn mowers, as we typically are on the 'save' category!

BLACKBERRY-CHOCOLATE FROZEN YOGURT
Makes 1 ½ Quarts

½ cup light-colored corn syrup
¼ cup sugar
½ cup coarsely chopped semisweet chocolate (3 ounces)

In a blender container or food processor bowl, combine half of the yogurt, ½ cup of the berries, half of the corn syrup and half of the sugar. Cover and blend or process until almost smooth. Pour mixture into ice cream freezer container. Repeat. Freeze mixture in an electric ice cream freezer according to manufacturer’s directions. Remove dasher from freezer. Add remaining 1½ cups berries and the chopped chocolate; stir to distribute. Ripen*.

*Note: To ripen frozen yogurt or ice cream, after stirring in berries and chocolate, cover top of freezer can with waxed paper or foil. Plug hole in lid and replace lid. Pack outer freezer bucket with enough ice and rock salt to cover top of freezer can, using about 4 cups ice and 1 cup salt. Ripen about 4 hours.

Recently a story ran in USA Today that wasn't necessarily surprising but an important reminder of how vulnerable overweight people are in times of stress to pack on additional pounds.

With this story at the front of my mind, I asked a leading expert in the field of health, Dr. Erika Schwartz, Medical Director of Cinergy Health, www.cinergyhealth.com, a few questions on behalf of our Smart Mama Community.

Question 1
With many readers constantly on the go, rarely finding time to sit relax and eat a healthy lunch, how do you prepare for the unexpected day as a "soccer mom?"
Dr. Erika Schwartz: Make your own trail mix and carry a zip lock sandwich baggie in your bag. Mix roasted not salted almonds with dry blueberries, sour cherries and a few hazelnuts. Also, make sure you carry a bottle of water or make your own iced green tea.
Question 2
An afternoon run to de-stress doesn't always fit into a mom’s day. What other ways can a mom de-stress that doesn't involve a babysitter or a pint of ice cream?
Dr. Erika Schwartz: 5 pound dumbbells in your home. Pick them up every few hours and pump them up and down from the elbow, back and forth, above your head and behind your back ten times each. Breathe while you are doing this exercise. Watch your arms turn into buff, beautiful arms and feel like a million bucks without going to the gym.
Question 3
What family friendly de-stressing activities do you recommend?
Dr. Erika Schwartz: Take an hour and read. Create a family book club. Share the books regardless of age.

Smart Mama Advice Needed - Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, Carnation Instant Breakfast or Ovaltine??

Based on some advice from a pediatrician friend, I'm going to begin limiting her milk consumption. Maybe the obscene amounts of milk she was drinking (5 + glass a day) had something to do with her irregular bowels!

My munchkin LOVES chocolate milk. I'm just not such a fan of giving her chocolate milk. I'm not sure why. I was thinking about letting her have one of serving of milk with either good old standard Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, Carnation Instant Breakfast or Ovaltine. I thought it would be a nice treat for her. I'm leaning towards Ovaltine, but I'm not even sure why.

A Constipated Munchkin!

Looking for Smart Mama advice!!!!

We've had some bouts of constipation with my 2 1/2 year old. I'm not sure if its her diet or since she's just recently potty trained, she would rather not deal with pooping - she would rather continue playing instead. She'll end up going 2 or more days without pooping before I end up giving her Myralax in her milk which pretty much insures that she'll be pooping in hours.

Have you experienced this with your munchkin? Did you alter his/her diet? My munchkin is a picky - I should actually say stubborn - eater so getting her to eat new things often requires lots of energy and patience!

The New Excercise Routine!

It's now been nearly 4 weeks since my latest knee surgery (hardware removal and scope)! Ouch!

Over the last year, I have had to dedicate much of my time to the recuperation from my very serious knee injury (Feb. 08) and subsequent surgeries (Feb 08 & May 09.) It has been a struggle to find an exercise routine that would get my hear rate up, not hurt my knee and ideally be enjoyable. With the limiations of no high impact cardio, walking with a limp and the inability to run, I finally found the solution with water aerobics. Have you ever tried it? I love it! Yes, I'm typically one of the youngest in the class, but it provides EXACTLY what I need! I enrolled in a water aerobics class at the local community college last fall. I go 2 nights a week.

Last weekend, we took our exercise plan to a new level in this house! We joined a gym! Yes, the gym has water aerobics, in a great indoor pool! It has a full size basketball court and unbelievable equipment for the hubby, and most importantly for the munchkin in this house, it has a great Kids Club. The munchkin has a great time doing her own exercise while I swim and daddy lifts weights and shoots some hoops!

I'll let you know how it goes! I hope we stick to it!

I received EXCELLENT ideas for smoothie ingredients!!! Below are some of the comments/ingredients. Are you inspired to make a yummy smoothie! I am!!! I've read both in the comments and in the Health Master recipe collection that comes with the blender, the use of spinach in a smoothie. I LOVE spinach but never have thought of using it together with fruit. I'll have to try it out! (PS....at the end you'll find the name of the lucky winner!!!)

My favorite smoothie ingredient would be honey - no matter what else I throw in as regards fruit etc, a small drizzle of honey just pulls it all together.
I loove blueberries in my smoothies! I could seriously eat just blueberries, soy milk and ice.

Hazard: The bench frame can collapse when weight is placed on it, posing a fall hazard to consumers.
Description: The benches are made of acacia wood with SKU 400037765413 and manufacturer style number GB1F printed on a hangtag attached to the bench. The acacia wood benches measure 39” wide, 20” deep and 36” high.
Sold at: Ross Stores nationwide in March 2009 for about $90.

Name of Product: Bunn® Single Cup Pod Brewers
Hazard: The pod drawer of the pod brewer can open unexpectedly during a brew cycle, posing a burn hazard to consumers.
Description: This recall involves Bunn® Single Pod Brewers. Models included in the recall are MCP (My Café Pourover) and MCA (My Café Automatic). The pod brewers have a black body with stainless backsplash and measure 12 inches high by 8 inches wide. “Bunn®” is printed on the front and lights up when the pod brewer is on.
Sold at: Web retailers, department and hardware stores nationwide between August 2004 and March 2009 for about $300.

Name of Product: Cumberland Outfitters Girl’s Hooded Sweatshirts
Hazard: The sweatshirts have a drawstring through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.
Description: This recall involves Cumberland Outfitters girl’s hooded sweatshirts with drawstrings. The sweatshirts were sold in four colors (melon, white, purple, and turquoise) and in sizes XS to L. Graphic designs such as a horse, vine or flower are printed on the front and back of the sweatshirts. RN number 14119 and one of the following style numbers are printed on the care label: 561560EC, 561565CO, 561570RA and 561575TU.
Sold at: Department and apparel retail stores nationwide from April 2007 through April 2009 for between $19 and $24.
