Tackle It Tuesday - The Medicine Cabinet!

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

I know I'm not alone....my medicine cabinet could be renamed the useless, expired stuff cabinet! I have cold medicine in there that I must have bought 5 years ago and about a million hotel size shampoos and conditioners. I have an old toothpaste tube with maybe 1 milligram of paste. I have 3 hair rubberbands - 1 which has seen better days! I have much, much more...

This morning I took everything out. Sorted by type..medicines, shampoos, tweezers...and threw out 6 expired medicines, 1 hair rubberband, tweezers that looked rusty (eek!) and that old toothpaste. I, in a very organized manner, placed the items in the medicine cabinet and VIOLA!!!

Be a smart mommy, and clean out your cabinet!!! It's a great process to go through once a quarter to make sure you are out with the old, and know to purchase the new!

See you tomorrow! I have at least 2 recalls to list from the Consumer Protection Safety Commission!

Smiles :-)

Thursday Thirteen - DVR Favorites

I remember being forewarned that DVR would change how we view television. They were right! I now, and even more so my husband, can't stand having to sit through commercials. Will purposely start watching a show 20 minutes after it started so that we can fast forward through commercials or boring parts. Today I have compiled a list of 13 programs on our DVR 'to do list.'
  1. House - At last this will be back on next Monday!!!
  2. Ghost Hunters - Thanks to an iVillage message board buddy, I am now hooked!
  3. American Idol - Need I say more?
  4. Survivor
  5. Jon & Kate Plus 8 - She makes me feel sane!
  6. Little People Big World - I'm not sure with my fascination with little people these days!
  7. Deadliest Catch - This is my husband's favorite!
  8. Law & Order SVU - Great show.
  9. CSI - Another favorite.
  10. CSI Miami - I think I really only watch this because it takes place in Miami - where I live. I honestly can't stand David Caruso's monotone voice!
  11. Top Chef - This show inspires me to want to be a chef!
  12. Hell's Kitchen - I love watch Gordon Ramsey be a nut case!
  13. New Amsterdam - My husband LOVES this show! I watch it, sort of - I flip through a magazine while it's on!

So what am I missing? What are some of your favorites? Share..share..share!!!

Don't forget, Monday is Munchkin Monday! Would you like to nominate your munchkin to be featured? If so, please email me a photo, 1st name, likes, dislikes, and birthday! I'll let you know when your munchkin makes his/her debut!

Tackle It Tuesday - When you wish upon a star - do you get photos?

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Living driving distance from Walt Disney World (4 hours), we have already taken my munchkin twice! Her 1st visit was when she was 9 month and the latest was this past January when she was almost 15 months. She loves it - and so do we!!!! She loves the characters and people watching.

This past trip we bought one of the autograph books that they sell and she had a different character sign nearly every page! Now here comes today's tackle...I need to print out or order copies of the photos we took of her meeting the characters. In the autograph book there is a spot to the side of each autograph to include a photo of the little one and the character. Also, I really, really, really, really need to start thinking of the tackle of scrapbooking I don't know how many years of events!

So what does this entail? I simply (ha ha ha!) need to sit here at the computer, open my Kodak EasyShare where I can easily order the pictures, pick the ones I want and click to order. Seems easy? Again, ha ha ha! I am very computer literate, so that's not where the challenge lies...it's the actual sitting down and doing it that takes a brain surgeon in this house to get it done! I'm the little engine that could today...I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

Free for Me Friday - Yummy Cuban Black Beans!!!

Happy Friday!!

As last week's recipe was such a success - thank you to the many comments and emails - I have decided to share another favorite! This week's recipe is Cuban Black Beans. I make this dish about once a month. My munchkin is a super slow chewer so I have tried to find other, less chewing needed, sources of protein. Beans have been a hit.

On the side, I am a 1st generation Cuban-American, so this recipe has been shared and put together by the best!

Cuban Black Beans

  • 1 lb of dried black beans
  • 10 cups of cold water
  • 2 green peppers
  • 2/3 cups of olive oil
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 4 teaspoons of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of dry white wine

Rinse beans in tap water. Place rinsed bean in large pot with the 10 cups of cold water. Quarter 1 green pepper and place in pot. Soak overnight.

In the same pot, bring water to a slow boil. Allow to cook for 45 minutes to soften the beans. Pour olive oil in a warmed fry pan. Saute diced onion, minced garlic and remaining chopped green pepper. Take about 1 cup of black beans and pour into fry pan. Mash the beans well. Pour mashed bean mixture back into the pot. Add salt, pepper, oregano, bay leaf and sugar. Allow to simmer for approximately 1 hour. Add vinegar and wine and continue to simmer at a low heat for at least 1 more hour. If beans are very watery, keep pot uncovered. Enjoy!

I would love to get some reviews! Please let me know what you think!!!

Tackle It Tuesday - The George Costanza Wallet!

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Dozens of receipts, appointment cards, driver's license, too many credit cards, insurance cards, mass cards, gift cards, $5, coupons, membership cards, and business cards have created my George Costanza wallet! I'm sure most of you remember the Seinfeld episode where George's wallet was so overstuffed that he walks and sits at a tilt. Well, I can't say that I walk like someone who hasn't had their V8, but I officially can no longer open and close my wallet in public without feeling embarassed.

This morning I tackled my wallet! I threw away some receipts, put others to file, tossed the expired coupons and the business cards of people I don't even remember meeting....I challenge you to the tackle!!

Free for me Friday - Yummy Chicken!!

As you read earlier this week, I received a recipe box for a wedding shower gift. The box was chock full of recipes written by friends and family. Much to my surprise I received 2 identical recipes! Two cousins (sisters of each other) who were not able to attend, sent me with their gifts the recipe for Pollo Tete (Tete Chicken). They had no idea that they had written up the same exact yummy dish that they had learned from their aunt!

With two recommendations for the dish, I made it and LOVED it! It's perfect for family dinners, dinner parties, storing as leftovers! Here's the recipe!

Ingredients

  • 8 skinless/boneless chicken breasts
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup of dry stuffing
  • 1 stick (1/4 cup) butter cut into squares
  • 1 can of Campbell's Chicken Mushroom soup
  • 1 cup of dry white wine
  • salt & pepper

Directions: Preheat over to 350. Salt & pepper chicken and arrange in glass 9x13 pan (pyrex.) Place one slice of cheese on each piece of chicken. In a bowl, mix soup and wine. Pour mixture to cover chicken. Sprinkle stuffing on top of everything. Place butter squares on top.

Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Enjoy!

I've tweaked the recipe before based on ingredients I had available - different cheese/soup...and it ALWAYS comes out so yummy!

I would love to get some reviews! Please let me know what you think!!!

Thursday Thirteen - Shopping Warehouse Style

Sometime soon after my college graduation, I received a free one-year membership from Costco. I guess it was their way of congratulating local graduates. I took them up on their offer.

I would go on occasion and without a doubt buy much too much for a 22 year old living in a tiny apartment. Times have changed. I now shop for my family - husband and daughter. We try to stay on a pretty tight budget. Our trips to Costco occur about every 6 - 8 weeks. This week I have organized my 13 top reason why I maintain my now near $50 membership.
  1. Diapers!!!! You can purchase Huggies size 5 for 17 cents a piece! This is even a teeny bit cheaper than the Kirkland ones. This alone is a reason to have a membership!
  2. Milk - I'm sure I don't need to tell you that the cost of milk continues to rise. The milk jugs always seem to be at least 75 cents less than the local supermarket.
  3. Lower prices on better quality meats - When we make our Costco trips my husband will spend at least 30 minutes going through and selecting that week's best deals. As you must, we buy enormous quantities. When we get home we begin by dividing up the meat into dinner portions for the 3 of us. We then vacuum seal the portion and drop them in our freezer. Each morning I pull out a baggie to make for dinner.
  4. Giftware- I just love so much of the beautiful gifts they sell. The prices are usually the same, if not lower, than what you would pay at a traditional retail store.
  5. Books - Their selection of children's books is great!
  6. Rotisserie Chicken - Three reasons why I love this more than the one I can buy at the supermarket - #1 It's cheaper, #2 It bigger, #3 It tastes better!
  7. Less trips out - Since I stock up about a month worth of meat and other items, I lessen my need to go to the supermarket. This saves on gas and the random spending you make each time you go.
  8. Clothing - They sell some great clothing. The prices compare to Marshalls, with the exception that they haven't spent their time being kicked around the floor.
  9. Kirkland - The Costco brand actually tastes really good and is reliable.
  10. Gas - Although we don't currently have this option at our Costco my parents have it at the BJs they belong to. It's not a huge savings - typically just a few cents - but if you're already there you might as well fill up!
  11. Frozen Foods - I cannot attest to all - but I do know that the Skinny Cows ice cream sandwiches that I love are much, much cheaper than at the supermarket.
  12. Jug of pretzels - You pay the same price for nearly triple the size!
  13. Samples - Ok, maybe I shouldn't be admitting this but I love to have the little "snacks" they offer you! It really does give you a chance to try different food items, and fills your little tummy.

I believe that using at warehouse club, such as Costco, is a Smart Mom decision - even if you only use it for diapers! I frequently receive offers for 1 week trial memberships. Keep your eye out! Maybe you can give it a try!

If you are a current warehouse shopper, please share your top reason to shop warehouse style!

See you tomorrow! For Free for me Friday I'll be sharing a favorite chicken dish the entire family loves!

Smiles!

Tackle It Tuesday - My Recipe Collection

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

I love to cook, and I love to use recipes. I really enjoy the excitement of finding a recipe that has already been proven to be successful, and then attempting to replicate the meal. I have a dozen cookbooks and dozens and dozens of recipe cards. The recipe cards are my favorites! These are recipes that friends and family have taken the time to write out for me to enjoy. I received most of these during my bridal shower a number of years ago. To me, there is something more fun in making my aunt’s yummy corn pudding or my cousin’s delicious chicken dish, to Martha Stewart’s springtime dessert collection!

Anyhow, this week’s tackle is putting some order to my recipe box. It has been a mess – cards all over the place, in no particular order. I have needed to put some sequence and even weed out a few!

Look how nice it came out! I’m so excited! Now, the new tackle….what should I make for dinner tonight??!!

I've found some items that might help you to reorganize your recipe collection!
